We are looking for volunteers for the first week of our recycling program, March 8-12 , to monitor the cafeteria. Volunteers will be asked to sign up for a 30-minute period between 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. It would be helpful to arrive a few minutes prior to your shift to allow adequate time to sign in at the front office and learn the sorting routine.
Volunteers will stand behind the garbage and recycling bins and help direct the children in correctly sorting their waste. Volunteers will not be responsible for any hands-on sorting — only directing the students to do it correctly. There will be clearly marked lists for sorting available in the cafeteria.
If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Susan Applegate with the days and times you are available at s.applegate@comcast.net. If you are not available for our first week but would like to get involved, the Recycling Pep Rally is coming up on March 5 at 2:40 p.m. We’ll also have other environmental efforts at Ralston you can participate in – please contact Susan.

Autumn Montgomery, the Ralston media specialist, is putting together the spring volunteer schedule for the library.
Thanks so much to all the parents and grandparents who already volunteer in the library. We are looking for a few more volunteers to fill in the scheduled shifts. If you could commit to two shifts a month it would be a tremendous help! Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons would be especially helpful. Volunteering in the library is a fun way to make a contribution to Ralston whether your child’s class is scheduled during your shift or not. On the job training is provided!
Please consider helping out in the library. It is a great way to be involved and present at the school. Give Autumn a call at 303-982-4386, or shoot her an e-mail at amontgom@jeffco.k12.co.us to let her know when you might be available to help in the library this spring!

We are seeing a new round of viruses including strep, stomach illnesses and coughs. Please don’t send your child to school if he/she is displaying signs of being sick. There a few kids coming to school “to see if they can make it through their day,” which exposes others to illness and doesn’t allow us to stay healthy as a school community. If your child has a fever, is vomiting or has an extremely severe cough, please keep your child home. Thank you!

The Jefferson County Board of Education voted to close Russell Elementary in Arvada after listening to hours of comment from the community. Three other schools that were proposed as closures – Pleasant View Elementary, O’Connell and Wheat Ridge middle schools – will remain open. Students from Russell Elementary will be going to a newly created K-8 school located in Arvada Middle School.
Along with voting to close Russell Elementary, the board also approved a motion to close, sell (when appropriate) or demolish all temporary buildings at school sites that are at 92 percent enrollment capacity or less. In addition, board members approved moving the Arvada West preschool to Fitzmorris Elementary and moving Swanson preschool to Secrest Elementary.
Those changes help eliminate cottages and temporary buildings. By implementing all of the changes, the district is saving approximately $1.27 million a year. The cost to implement all of the options will be up to $2.1 million in one-time capital investment costs. The district plans to sell Russell Elementary, which carries a substantial real estate value that has yet to be determined. Board members say this isn’t the end of the facilities usage work.

Do your kids suffer from mood swings, “spaciness,” irritability, focus or attention problems, whininess, sleep problems, hyperactivity, or restlessness? Kym Shaffner is a teacher in Jeffco who likes to bring her message of the ways food affects how we learn. Last Tuesday Ralston hosted Ms. Shaffner and it was fascinating!
As a teacher in Jeffco, Kym sees the impact of healthy eating on her students after working with families to improve nutrition. Much of her work is based on Dianne Craft; you can learn about her at www.diannecraft. org.
Principal Quanbeck will be posting other Web sites and books on this topic on her principal’s page later this week. Kym is speaking again at Wilmot Elementary in Evergreen, on October 21 at 6:00 p.m. This would be a great session to attend, especially if you have any concerns with your child regarding attention or focus issues.

As part of our Parent Seminar offerings this year, we’ll be reading a book starting in November and discussing it in January. The book we’ve selected is Grown Up Digital by Don Tapscott.
This is a great study of how people ages 11-30 are learning and growing up differently from what we as adults are used to. As parents, this is sure to be a fascinating look at our own children. As educators, we are excited to learn more about our students so that we can reflect this in our teaching. As employers, we all may be impacted by this new generation of workers.
Amazon has the book new and used. It also has a great summary. Grown Up Digital was selected as the Best Business Book for 2008 by The Economist.

Consider this the one time of year you can encourage your child(ren) to act-up! Please have them try-out for Ralston’s annual musical. There are parts for all ages and sizes, and no experience is necessary — just the willingness to have fun and work hard. Auditions will be held in the gym tomorrow from 3:30 – 5:30.
Approximately 60 students will be cast, including backstage and technical assistants (must be in grade 5 or 6). While there is no guarantee that everyone who auditions will be cast in the play, it is a fun time for all who participate! Students auditioning must plan to stay the entire two-hour session. Every student who attends the audition receives a personalized audition certificate.
Rehearsals will be Monday-Friday, October 19-23, 3:30-5:30 and/or 6:00-8:00pm as well as dress rehearsal and performance Saturday, October 24. Not all cast members are needed at every session; however those auditioning must be able to attend all rehearsals required for their role.
For questions, please call Laura Elliott 303-526-2842 or Janet Perriman 303-526- 2049.

Do you want to be able to attend a conference with your student’s teacher and not worry about missing work? This summer, Governor Bill Ritter signed a bill that allows parents/guardians to take unpaid time off of work to attend school-related activities.
The Parental Involvement in K-12 Education Act gives parents, who work at public agencies or companies with more than 50 workers, the chance to take six hours per month or 18 hours each school year of unpaid leave to go to things like parent-teacher conferences, special education interventions or behavioral meetings with educators. The bill says employers have the discretion to limit the time taken to be no more than three hours at one time.
Part-time workers have access to a portion of those leave hours depending on their work schedule. According to the law, all employees have to give their supervisors a week’s notice and provide them with written verification from the school or school district of the academic activity.
The leave under this bill is specified as unpaid leave, but it states employers can make agreements with employees, allowing them to take paid leave and then make up the work time in the same week or use available accrued paid leave such as vacation, sick, personal or paid time off.

If you haven’t heard by now, we have formed two Moms’ Football teams to help raise funds for Ralston. These moms and their coach have graciously volunteered their time to play in the Feline Football Tournament. They will play flag football for your school in this fun, family friendly event – playing against moms from other Evergreen area elementary schools on Sunday, October 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Graham Fields (Bergen Valley Elementary).
Ways to Help and Support Ralston for this event:
- Donated Items – do you have a prize to donate or know someone who does? If so, please contact Valerie Waltz as soon as possible so your item is available for the silent auction on game day.
- Please encourage your friends and family to sponsor Ralston’s teams by pledging per point. Any amount - 25¢ (or more) per point will be helpful. It is a great way for families to support this event if you are unable to attend.
- Tickets are available for the after party (including a full buffet) at Trinity Irish Pub; $10 for adults and $2 for kids – $7 out of that goes to the PTA. We need these tickets purchased ASAP so Trinity knows how much food to prepare.
Our moms that are playing on our two Ralston Teams:
- Fiesty Felines: Valerie Waltz, Linda McFarlin, Debbie Pykkonnnen, Karen Quanbeck, Laura Elliott, Sydney Beck, Jayme Sitzman, Heather Thompson, Sue Speyer, Jody Tucker, Erica Topel, Marci Grant, Katie Beach, Shelby Jackson
- Cozmo Kitties: Patty Telgener, Julie Abariotes, Jodi Kostelnik, Heather Schram, Chris Hudson, Jacquie Wicks, Lori Radcliffe, Molly Iskalis, Rachael Meis, Becky Bosch, Maryellen Mullarkey, Sherrie Lorenz
Bring the whole family! Come to Graham Fields anytime after 9:00 a.m. The championships are scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. – so come to cheer and support your Ralston moms. Thank you for your generous support to benefit Ralston Elementary. Hope to see you there!

Our temps are leaving us! With the addition of our new classrooms, we are ready to say goodbye to our temporary buildings. Preparations will begin for the actual move with heavy equipment on site and a ramp being built to move the temp that currently resides near the playground. We will use temporary and chain link fencing to keep kids away from the areas affected. The temps will be staged in our parking lot for part of a night, then moved in the middle of the night. The whole process will take a couple of weeks and is weather-dependent. The field will be returned to its original state, but they won’t re-sod until March.

We have a strong group of 6th graders ready to babysit for evening events, such as PTA meetings, conferences, seminars, etc., but we needa parent to coordinate our for these events. Our parent volunteer would schedule 2-3 kids in for each event, ensure the kids are prepared for each event with crafts and games, and answer questions during the year. This volunteer wouldn’t need to be at Ralston for each time, and it’s not a huge time commitment. Contact Karen Quanbeck at 982-4386 if you are interested!

Sponsorships
Do you run a small business? Know someone who does? Looking for a way to support Ralston Elementary? The carnival committee is in desparate need of sponsorships in order to offset some of the cost to run the carnival. The more we can get sponsored, the more of the profits go back to the school.
Consider becoming a sponsor. All sponsors have the option of setting up a table (manned or not) with their information and advertsing at the carnival. Some of the larger sponsorships include advertising in the November issue of the Ralston newsletter.
Volunteers
We’re looking for a few good parents to volunteer with us at the Carnival this Saturday, October 3. You’ll get to work the ticket table, run one of the activities or help the student leaders run one of the activities. We have slots to fill in all shifts: 10:00 – noon, noon – 2:00, 2:00 – 3:00 (includes clean-up). Having our parent volunteers assures us that all will run smoothly with the carnival. Please let us know if you can give of your time.
For those interested, please contact Kendi Thiede at kendithiede@hotmail.com. Thanks!

Important information regarding H1N1 is coming home in weekly folders. Please take the time to read over the letters and handouts. Help us educate our students on ways to stay healthy, such as effective hand-washing, covering your mouth when sneezing or coughing, and staying home when ill.
We are seeing students with flu-like symptoms, which likely indicates the seasonal flu as well as the H1N1 flu virus. In the past few days, students at our school have been diagonsed with the flu.
According to the county health department, most of the flu circulating in our community at this time is H1N1, so having cases of H1N1 is not unexpected. Please read the updated letter going home in weekly folders and posted on the global email. Please don’t hesitate to call with questions.

On Tuesday, Sept. 8, President Obama will address the nation’s school children via a live broadcast at 10 a.m. (Denver time). The speech will be carried live on the White House Web site and on C-SPAN. According to the White House, the intent of the speech is to encourage students to work hard, set educational goals and take responsibility for their learning. School districts across the country have been asked to make the speech available to students.
We are allowing teachers to make a classroom-based decision regarding showing the speech. Students are allowed to “opt out” of the speech if it is shown in their classroom.
Teachers will not discuss political beliefs with students. As indicated above, the intent of the speech is to “encourage students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning.” Any follow up activities must be tied to the district’s curriculum and NOT include political beliefs.
Teachers will let their students know on Friday, Sept. 4, if they plan to show the speech. If you would like to have your child “opt out” of viewing the speech, you can call or email your child’s teacher, contact me at 982-4386 or kquanbec@jeffco.k12.co.us OR return the note that will be included in your child’s weekly folder. We will provide a fun educational alternative activity.
Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Although this has been an interesting controversy throughout the nation, our attention is still focused on the students in our classrooms and the aligned curriculum we deliver.

5:45 – 6:00 p.m.: Principal’s meeting (in the gymnasium)
6:00 – 6:45 p.m.: Session II (in your child’s classroom)
Please note that Sessions I & II are duplicates so that parents can attend to the one session that best fits their schedule.

Allergy Awareness guidelines are now in place and being enforced throughout the school. If you haven’t read through the guidelines, please do so. They are available in main lobby and on our school Web site under “school documents.” Our classrooms are peanut-free. Our cafeteria has designated tables for peanuts and tree nuts, as well as peanut/tree nut-free tables so that kids can choose where to eat based on what is in their lunch boxes.
Thanks to parent genorosity, we also have a “hands free” sink in the cafeteria for ALL kids to use, especially those who eat peanut products at lunch. Thank you for talking to your children about the guidelines!

Please remind your kids that they should line up at the outside door of their classroom each morning.
- Students in classrooms on the playground side of the building may enter the front doors and go through the new primary hallway to the new double doors across from the gym or go around the south side of the building (gravel road) to access this area.
- The front sidewalk with the rail ONLY goes as far as Ms. Bell’s room.
- Kids in the classrooms at the back of the building can walk around the north side of the building toward the field.
- Kids arriving on the bus will use the north entrance and cut through using the double doors near the library.
Please remind your kids to not play on the playground equipment in the morning – we do not have supervision and cannot ensure their safety.

The new security doors installed just inside the main entrance of the school are now operational. These doors will be open from 8:40-8:55 a.m. and 3:20-3:35 p.m. each day. Other times, please enter through the main office to sign in. As we watch our “traffic flow” into the building, we may change the door times to ensure safety for our kids and access for our families. Thanks for your patience as we figure out the best system.

Thanks to all of our families for your flexibility with the changes to the Hug & Go and parking lot due to construction last spring.
Please remember that the Hug & Go is for pick-up and drop-off only. If you need to park, please use the parking lot.
The north parking lot (near the field) is only for buses and staff/maintenance vehicles. Currently a gate that is only used by the buses is stuck in the “up” position – making it look like it is open for public use. Only buses should be passing through this area.

Show your Ralston school spirit with spirit wear. If you haven’t had a chance to see our new spirit wear for the 2009-10 school year, come in the lobby any afternoon this week. I have pre-ordered inventory, so most items you can walk in, try on and walk out with them in your hand. I am already selling out of some styles, so hurry in. I will also have a table set up at back to school night (Sept. 1) in the lobby. We accept cash or checks.
This year we are offering:
- Short-sleeve T-shirts (light blue w/ navy trim) – $12
- Long-sleeve T-shirts (heather gray) – $14
- Full-zip hooded sweatshirts (navy or light blue) – $28
- Fleece vests (navy in adult sizes XS – XL ) – $28
- Baseball caps (navy) – $10
All styles are unisex and feature the Ralston Logo or name. And be sure your student wears his or her Spirit Wear every Friday! Teachers will be counting their student wearing Spirit Wear each Friday. The class with the highest count for each month will win a “treat” party for their room (ice cream, popcorn, hot chocolate, etc).
Please note that sold out items can be special ordered. I will be taking orders for the next run to be delivered in October, so don’t panic if your style is sold out. All orders must be in by Monday, September 14. Order forms will be available wherever Spirit Wear is sold, or contact me. Plan ahead now for holiday gifts, as we will not be offering a holiday re-order this year.

Welcome! We are so glad that you have chosen Ralston for the 2009-2010 school year. Our teachers and staff look forward to working with your children. We recognize that every child brings special and unique gifts to the classroom; our job is to nurture these gifts so that your child grows socially and academically throughout the year.
Ralston has experienced a lot of changes over the summer and we are opening a new classroom wing this year. Thoughtful planning by staff, parents, and district experts has created some great new spaces for our kids.We have added five classrooms in a new primary wing, a stage/music room, a remodeled kitchen and cafeteria, remodeled tutor rooms, and a staff lounge/book room.
In addition, a security vestibule in the form of a glass wall (with double doors) now routes visitors into the main office, providing added safety for our students. In addition, we will continue our “high achieving” Power Library status this school year. Our teachers collaborate with our teacher-librarian to integrate technology such as Smart Boards and laptops into core instruction.
Our tutor program will also continue to serve kids of all abilities, thanks to our generous parent support. We will use more tutor hours in the “co-teaching” model to help with anticipated larger class sizes. We will be implementing intentional differentiation in math at all grade levels with pre- and post-testing. This allows us to flexibly group students based on their achievement levels
on specific math skills.
Finally, our partnership with parents continues to be a valuable tool at Ralston. We believe that a parent is a child’s first teacher; an essential component to a successful education is a good school-home connection. This includes communication as well as partnering on skills and concept reinforcement.
Thanks again for choosing Ralston. We’re looking forward to a great year.
